Space Theme Activities for the Classroom
A Trip to the Moon
In
Curious George and the Rocket, George receives an important letter inviting him to take a rocket ship into space. Explain to your students that NASA is an acronym for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. NASA was founded in 1958 as part of the United States government, and it is in charge of the U.S. space program. Ask your students to pretend that they work for NASA. Then have them write letters to Curious George, asking him to take a trip to the moon. Instruct them to tell George why he is wanted for the mission, what he will be doing on the moon, and how he should prepare for the trip.
Space Word Wall
Create a Word Wall using a list of space-related words generated by your students. Start brainstorming by asking your class to think about and then name some words that have to do with space. Some of the words they think of may include
astronaut, rocket, spaceship, sun, moon, Earth and other planets, stars, constellations, and
comets. Write each word on a star cutout, give one to each student to decorate, and then hang the stars on the wall.
