Pets: Theme Activities for the Classroom
Lend a Helping Paw
As Curious George learned in
Curious George and the Puppies, there are a lot of animals at the animal shelter that need good homes. Brainstorm with your class about what types of animals are commonly found in animal shelters. Then have your students create and decorate posters asking people to consider adopting one. You can check ASPCA websites to find animals that need homes. Make sure the posters include a picture or drawing of the animal, its name, gender, and age, and how to get in touch with the animal shelter where it can be found.
Puppy Supplies
Puppies need a lot of attention, food to eat, and things to play with. Write the following words on the board:
Bone, Hat, Bowl, Shoes, Cage, Umbrella, Ball, Leash, Glasses, Collar, Socks, Underwear, Bath, Treats, Pizza, Love. Read each word aloud to your class. Then ask your students to cross off the words that a puppy does not need to use, eat, or play with. The boldface words are the puppy-related words. When there are only puppy-related words left on the board, discuss why a puppy would need each one.
